Redefining Wealth as the Freedom to Choose
The Story Behind the Artwork
‘Mom, I Am a Rich Man’ takes its title from a phrase attributed to Cher, spoken in response to the enduring belief that a woman requires a man for security and stability. The statement has an imbalance of power, safety and success that has historically been framed in masculine terms.
The tension exposed by the phrase lies in the language itself. For women to claim independence they have often been required to speak in terms associated with men rather than redefining success on their own terms. This work questions why autonomy is still translated into masculine coded language in order to be taken seriously.
Addressed to “mom” the phrase carries generational weight. It acknowledges inherited beliefs passed down by women who learned to survive within restricted systems. These narratives were adaptive strategies not failures, dependence was often necessary and autonomy was not always accessible.
Visual elements
At the centre of the painting, a woman holds a newspaper in front of her face. It becomes an act of awareness and engagement with the structures that shape the world around her.
The deep, muddy green background grounds the composition, while earthy browns and airy blue tones emphasise physical presence over idealisation. These colours anchor her rather than present her as an object.
The lingerie introduces sensuality without submission. It exists on her own terms, she is not staged for the male gaze but held with control.
Meaning and intent
Rather than claiming dominance over men, the painting reflects a broader shift: women increasingly defining success on their own terms. This painting redefines wealth as the freedom to choose, to leave and to define one's life without dependence on external factors.
By obscuring her face, she controls the narrative. It resists the viewer's demand for access and acts as a declaration of internal authority. At its core, it is about a woman who no longer seeks permission and she is unapologetically successful on her own terms. It reflects a shift from external validation to internal authority.
