The story behind the artwork
Girlhood was created to honour the emotional bond shared between women. The kind of love that doesn't demand performance, perfection or romantic validation. It reflects the cultural shift of women choosing to invest in themselves and each other instead of pouring emotional labour into relationships that don't fulfil them. Inspired by the shared language of friendship, rage and dismantling internalised misogyny, this piece celebrates the women who helped us choose ourselves.
Visual elements
The circle of heels form a space with no beginning or end. It is a visual symbol of girlhood without hierarchy or competition. Removed from the male gaze it marks the identity and power between women.
Meaning and intent
'Girlhood' challenges the idea that love is something earned by being chosen. It challenges the idea that you have to change yourself or perform in order to be loved. It honours the women who have stopped shrinking for approval, unlearnt the belief that sacrifice equals love, and started redirecting their energy into themselves. This work is a reminder that the most intimate love story was never romantic, it was found in the women who understood us and stayed.
