I Paint Therefore I Am

The Art of Becoming Who You Already Are

The Story Behind the Artwork

This piece was created as an exploration of identity formed through repeating small actions that develop huge consequences. Influenced by a reinterpretation of Descartes’ philosophy “I think therefore I am” into “I paint therefore I am”, positioning artistic practice not as an aspiration but as evidence of identity. Through this lens, being an artist becomes a lived declaration rather than an ideal.

The artwork explores the role of boundaries and self loyalty. I created the internal space required for clarity and alignment. In making these small repeated choices, I moved from aspiring to be an artist toward being one. By showing up, practicing and creating, these decisions deepened my confidence to claim my identity as an artist rather than someone who was ‘trying’ to be one.

Visual elements
The figure in this piece is grounded rather than performative. She is confident in herself, she's done the inner work and she's starting to feel the positive outcomes it. She carries a sense of growth and self-understanding. The colour palette leans into muted blues and browns, reinforcing a grounded and intentional tone. They worked together naturally, mirroring how unexpected things fall into place when you are aligned and confident in your direction. The background remains loose and messy: a visual echo of the noise and unpredictability of the world around her. The spacious composition gives emotional room to choose, breathe and exist without urgency. Nothing is crowed, she exists with ease.
Meaning and intent
This work acknowledges the importance of environment and emotional boundaries. You can't change other people, but you can choose who you allow close enough to be around you. When you surround yourself with people who are grounded and self aware, confidence becomes a natural byproduct rather than something you have to fight for. Other people's emotions no longer spill into your self worth. This piece is a declaration of choosing yourself: standing steady despite the noise around you and letting confidence emerge through action.
