The Story Behind the Artwork

Nocturne continues the story of Tori, shifting the focus to identities we create. While Tori takes its title from a first name, Nocturne adopts her surname. This subtle but significant shift becomes a metaphor for reinvention. French for “of the night”, Nocturne explore the psychology of the alter ego. This shifts the focus towards the identity she consciously creates.

Nocturne is a portrait of a mood. Inspired by the atmosphere of the night, the title evokes a world associated with desire, fantasy and secrecy. The night has always been associated with freedom. It is where different parts of ourselves are given permission to exist.

Visual elements

Every decision reinforces the feeling of stepping into a version of yourself that has been chosen. She is curating herself, the pose, the outfit, the colour palette is all intentional. It balances elegance with strength, creating a sense of confidence as she is aware she is being seen. The glossy surfaces catch the light, while the thick brushstrokes replicate that identity is layered and can be reconstructed.

Meaning and intent

Nocturne interrupts any expectations placed upon her. She explores what is possible when shame loses its grip and approval no longer matters. This kind of re-intervention demands the death of an old identity. She is curating who she wants to be and how she wants to be seen.

This painting considers identity as something fluid, that. an be rewritten and redefined. Nocturne is about construction. It challenges the idea that identity is fixed, and gives us permission to evolve beyond the roles and expectations of ourselves we have outgrown.
