The Art of Noticing (Print)
Simply about looking a little longer
A print size of your choosing on canvas paper or stretched over bars ready to hang
The story behind the artwork
The Philosopher William James wrote "my experience is what I agree to attend to". In many ways, our lives are shaped by what we repeatedly give attention to. Artists understand this instinctively. It is about revealing what everyone else has overlooked. Painting teaches observation before it teaches technique. Looking carefully dissolves assumptions. The longer you observe the more complex the world becomes.
Visual elements
Attention creates compassion because it reminds us that every person contains far more than what they first reveal. There is something profoundly healing about being noticed ourselves. To be seen is one of the deepest human needs. For who we are beneath the performance. This is why noticing can become an antidote to loneliness. It transforms relationships from transactions into encounters.
Meaning and intent
The art of noticing changes the way we experience ourselves. We become aware of patterns we previously ignored, We notice that certain places make us feel calm while others can leave us restless. We notice the conversations that energise us and the ones that drain us. We begin to recognise the moments when we abandon ourselves to meet other peoples expectations.
