The Story Behind the Artwork
This piece was created for my Mail Club, it began as an opportunity to create something lighter and more playful. Much of my work centres on the female body and the complex experiences attached to womanhood, this piece offers a deliberate change of pace. There is freedom in making something simply because you like it.
Visual elements
Pink is so often associated with femininity, while cowboy boots carry something tougher and more rebellious. Painting them pink felt like a way of playing with that idea of putting them together rather than having to choose between the two.
Meaning and intent
As women we are often made to feel like strength has to look a certain way, that becoming more independent, outspoken or sure of ourselves means becoming harder. This painting portrays the idea that you can still be soft and know exactly where you are going. You can be feminine without being fragile.
