The story behind the artwork
Keep the part of yourself that is ready to walk away. She has removed everything except her boots, the thing associated with her ability to leave. ‘Leave the Boots On’ centres around the idea that the ability to leave is what makes choosing to stay meaningful. There is a difference between remaining somewhere because you freely choose to, and staying because you feel unable to walk away. She is open to being vulnerable but she has not given up her autonomy. The boots are a reminder that she can leave.
Visual elements
The composition deliberately draws the eye down her body before reaching the boots at the bottom of the canvas. Rather than turning away or using her arm to create a boundary across her body, she stands openly. Her stance is not an attempt to conceal or apologise for her nudity.
Modesty is usually communicated through poses that strategically cover or compensate certain areas. There is an attitude that is created within the contrast of her nude figure and the heavy boots. Their visual weight anchors her physically, introducing strength and independence to the piece.
The boots are an exploration of what it means to retain autonomy within intimacy. The grounded colour palette reinforces this confrontation of what the boots represent.
Meaning and intent
This work isn't so much about guarding yourself against intimacy, it’s more about refusing to confuse intimacy with surrendering your boundaries. The boots represent the part of us that should remain when we enter into new relationships. Our decisions are strongest when it is a choice not a necessity.
Being intimate with someone shouldn’t mean losing your independence or becoming so entwined with another person that you forget you still have choices. There is something powerful about being completely open with someone while still knowing you are there because you want to be.
