The story behind the artwork
This cropped painting is taken from a deeply personal commission inspired by a conversation about aging, self-image and the desire to feel beautiful. During our first conversation she spoke openly about how difficult it had become to recognise herself as she got older. By focusing on a single section of the original artwork, this print becomes a reminder that every part of us holds meaning and beauty. Sometimes the smallest details carry the greatest emotional weight.
Visual elements
Expressive brushstrokes sweep across the canvas, building layers of warm neutrals and earthy terracotta. Thick passages of paint are contrasted with delicate splashes allowing the process to remain visible. The cropped composition removes the context of the figure, instead our focus is found in the stories carried within the artwork. Every detail matters because it belongs to the bigger picture.
Meaning and intent
'Between the Lines' explores the relationship between beauty and age. It reflects on the stories that we carry in our bodies. Every layer becomes evidence of experience and a life that has been lived. Just as every section of this painting contributes to a larger whole, every stage of a woman's life contributes to the person she becomes.
