EMMA
She is the Light of My Life
The Story Behind the Artwork
This piece was created as a deeply personal commission, inspired by Emma’s description of her little girl as “the light of my life”. That sentiment became the emotional foundation of the painting: a reflection of the love, anticipation and connection that exists in this chapter.
Painted while Emma was seven months pregnant, the work focuses on the emotional prescience of the woman within it. Through light, posture and atmosphere, the painting captures a sense of warmth reflecting a new depth of love.
Visual elements
This piece feels emotionally led rather than purely representational, using colour and atmosphere to communicate feelings. The use of navy, charcoal and golden yellows creates a striking emotional contrasts throughout the composition, giving the painting both depth and warmth at the same time.
The painting illustrates light as though it is coming from within her body. Warm ochre and golden tones move through the figure like an internal glow, surrounded by deeper blue tones that feel protective. Together these colours create a sense of intimacy, reflecting Emma's description of her daughter as "the light of my life".
Meaning and intent
This piece was created to preserve a moment of personal transformation and the emotional shift that comes with becoming a mother. Pregnancy is an experience that visibly changes both body and identity at the same time, and this painting serves as a way of honouring that chapter before it passes.
At its core this piece reflects the idea of carrying light within you. This painting explores how love can transform the way a woman s sees both herself and the future ahead of her.
