The story behind the artwork
The Grey Area explores the experiences that can be difficult to define or explain, and the lingering questions they leave behind. Inspired by the ambiguity that can surround conversations about consent, it reflects on moments shaped by pressure, expectation, persistence or guilt where boundaries may feel blurred but the emotional impact remains.
Visual elements
Pink, traditionally associated with romance and hope, represents the desire to move through life with optimism towards new relationships. The grey interprets that. It becomes a symbol of ambiguity - the space where experiences, intentions and emotions are not always easily defined as good or bad. Together the colours mirror the tension between wanting to trust, connect and embrace romance, while carrying the uncertainty that can arise when personal feelings become difficult to untangle.
Meaning and intent
At its heart, the grey area explores themes of consent, agency and the complexity of female experience. It reflects on the moments many women revisit long after they have passed - moments that may have been dismissed, questioned or difficult to articulate, yet continue to take up space.
