The story behind the artwork
Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, this painting explores beauty through imperfection. Her kimono is decorated with delicate gold florals, drawing inspiration from the philosophy behind Kintsugi: the Japanese practice of repairing broken ceramics with gold. At its core, this piece honours trusting the creative process and allowing imperfection to remain visible, honouring flaws as part of somethings history.
Visual elements
The textured brushstrokes echo the handmade spirit of wabi-sabi, allowing imperfections to remain visible. Light is used architecturally across the figure's back, while the soft neutral background draws from the calm minimalism of Japanese interiors and the use of negative space. The gold detailing within the kimono subtly references kintsugi, symbolising beauty shaped through experience over perfection.
Meaning and intent
This piece reflects wabi-sabi in the way it was created. It requires greater patience and precision. The process became a way of embracing uncertainty and creating without the need for perfection. The work reflects the courage to try something new and trust that beauty can still exist within imperfection.
